The Licensed Practical Nurse, School Health Program, is part of a multidisciplinary team who works with Registered Nurses, Administrative staff, students, parents and school staff. The successful candidate will need to be well organized and able to handle a high volume of immunization in various programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to becoming familiar with vaccines, teaching classes of school aged children about vaccines, delivering immunizations to individuals 5 years of age and older in the schools and in clinic, packing, transporting and unpacking supplies for immunization at various school sites, charting, traveling to several schools regularly, and other sites and referring high needs clients to appropriate services.The LPN is required to pack, lift, move, and transport heavy and/or awkward supplies to various work sites. Service delivery may require walking several blocks and climbing several flights of stairs, awkward and repetitive movements, sitting, standing, and/or bending for long periods of time. The position requires travel within urban and rural communities during work hours. The successful candidate will be required to follow appropriate hand hygiene techniques including the regular use of alcohol based sanitizer and soap. The LPN’s practice in this position will focus primarily as a LPN with the School Health Program out of East Edmonton Health Centre.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).Additional Required Qualifications:
Successful completion of certification in Immunizations and successful completion of education in administering intramuscular injections is required. Previous direct experience in administering intramuscular injections and in immunizations is desirable. Strong analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and organizational skills. Working knowledge of computer applications including basic word processing, email, Internet access, data entry and specifically use of the Meditech electronic medical record. Note: This position requires a vehicle for business use. Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle in good repair for work-related travel is required.Preferred Qualifications:
Recent experience in public health School Health is preferred. Meditech experience is preferred.Ability to be self-directed and to exercise independent nursing judgment. Ability to provide presentations and teaching to large groups. Strong interpersonal skills. Experience with inter-disciplinary team work and ability to work with Assigned nurse for designated schools. Experience working with teens, diverse cultures, and marginalized populations Strong written and oral communication skills.
